Her reply mirrors his call — one word for one word — and the symmetry is itself a small performance of innocence. A guilty child does not answer so promptly or so brightly; Capitú's instant 'Papae!' is composure dressed as spontaneity, the very poise she has just shown with the nail now turned to her voice.

Machado gives the exchange the rhythm of a duet: 'Capitú!' / 'Papae!' The two names answer each other across the yard, father and daughter, and the reader hears how easily she meets the summons. It is the same self-possession that will later be read against her. Here, though, it reads simply as a girl who knows how to manage a parent — a talent every child has, and only this narrator will remember as a warning.
