'Não podia deixar de cumprir' — she could not fail to keep it. The verb 'cumprir,' to fulfill a duty, seals the analysis: Dona Glória is bound, not free. Her love for Bento does not release her; it makes the fulfillment more painful, which is why she wept.

Capitú's reading is now complete and coldly accurate. The mother is trapped inside her own vow exactly as Bento is trapped inside it. Machado thus arranges two prisoners of the same promise, mother and son, and hands the girl the clarity to see the whole mechanism. Having named the force she cannot break by argument, Capitú will not rage against it — she pivots to strategy. The reflection that opened the passage ends here, in a precise diagnosis, and from this diagnosis the plan will be born.
