Justina slides into reported speech, ventriloquizing José Dias's pitch: 'a vida de padre é...' — the life of a priest is such-and-such. She is quoting him now, half-mocking, letting his salesmanship speak in her mouth.

This is Machado's economy at work. Rather than stage a separate scene of José Dias praising the priesthood, he folds it into Justina's summary, where it arrives already tinged with her skepticism. The 'vida de padre' is exactly the life being marketed to Bento, and the marketing lands on a boy in love with the girl next door. Justina's flat relay strips the vocation of its glow before José Dias's imagined eloquence can supply it, so that the priesthood reaches Bento pre-deflated, a sales pitch overheard rather than a calling felt.
