The narrator inserts a small stage direction: he spoke only 'depois de alguns instantes.' The delay is calculated, letting the flattery settle and the sea-calm work before the sentence is delivered. Bentinho is timing his lines like a performer, and the older Casmurro recording the scene notices, and preserves, the pause.

The first person is worth marking — 'disse eu.' This is memory reconstructing its own cunning, an aging man watching his boyhood self manage a conversation with a skill that half surprises, half indicts him. Machado's narrator is forever caught between recounting and re-arranging; the neat 'some moments' has the polish of a scene retold many times. Whether the timing was quite so deliberate in life, the telling makes it so, and the pause becomes one more small proof of how early Bentinho learned to shape the people around him with silence as much as speech.
