The household performs the full ceremony of welcome, going out to meet the sovereign at the entrance — the choreographed deference of the age, everyone in their place. Machado keeps 'a nossa familia' as the unit, the collective that so often acts as one body in the novel: mother, uncle, cousin, agregado, all arranged around the boy at the center.

There is a gentle irony in the dream's precision about protocol. Bento, who feels powerless within this family, imagines it mobilized entirely in service of his cause, streaming out the door in his honor without knowing it. The family that will not spare him the seminary is, in sleep, the family that lines up to receive the very authority come to save him from it. The wish rearranges the household's whole weight, for once, behind rather than against him.
