Of the rest, I could not gaze at him for long, nor at the companion, who, parallel to me, raised his head with the air of being himself the God of armies. Soon I felt tired; my arms fell, fortunately the house was near, on Rua do Senado.
The narrator describes his physical exhaustion and inability to observe the man and his companion for long.
The narrator's physical weakness prevents him from observing the man and his companion. The companion's proud posture is described ironically, comparing him to the God of armies. The narrator's fatigue and the proximity of his home provide a sense of relief.
