The setting

But however much I inquired throughout the neighbourhood, I did not find a single person who had any dealings with her, and who could introduce me.

A note on this passage

The disguise is working: no one in the neighbourhood has any 'relações' with Elvira, so no one can perform the ordinary social rite of introduction. In a world where a person of standing could only be met through a mutual acquaintance, Isaura's total isolation is a fortress — it keeps every curious stranger at bay. But Álvaro's frustration measures the cost of that fortress: the very safety that walls out Leôncio's agents also walls out ordinary human connection, leaving Isaura and Miguel utterly alone. The book quietly notes the price of hiding: to be unfindable by one's enemies is to be unreachable by any friend. Isaura is protected and imprisoned by the same solitude.
