Lost in sweet memories

Alvaro pára em sua narrativa, como que embevecido em tão suaves recordações.
Álvaro pauses in his narrative, as if enraptured by such sweet recollections.
The narrator steps back from the dialogue to show us Álvaro's face — 'embevecido', enraptured, lost in his own memory. It is a small, tender portrait of a man genuinely in love, so absorbed that he breaks off his story to dwell in the feeling. The detail matters because it establishes that Álvaro's ardour is no pose: he is not performing infatuation for his friends but caught in it. Against the running cynicism of the other gallants, Guimarães isolates this one sincere heart, and it is on that sincerity that the whole later plot will lean — for Álvaro's love, unlike the salon's games, will prove strong enough to matter to Isaura's fate.
