The death is stated plainly and its weight is elsewhere: this 'boa e respeitavel senhora', soon to be revealed as Isaura's protector, is gone, and the narrator pauses the forward story to tell us who she was and what she did. Her passing is the hinge — it is her deathbed 'recommendação' that binds Malvina to Isaura's care in Chapter I. Guimarães kills her here at the start of the backward glance so that everything he is about to tell us about her goodness arrives already shadowed by her loss. The one person in this family with a warm heart dies on the second page of the family's history.
