Here is the one objection the Commander can actually name, and it tells us everything: the raising of Isaura is 'um divertimento um pouco mais dispendioso' — a slightly costlier amusement. Not unjust, not cruel, not wrong; expensive. His moral universe has one axis, and it is money. Then the shrug: 'que lhe faça bom proveito', may it do her good — the grudging permission a man gives to a harmless indulgence he has decided not to fight. He grants his wife her hobby the way one lets a child keep a toy. That the 'toy' is a living girl never once crosses into his accounting.
