The setting

Your sister insists that I free her, pleading that this was my late mother's wish;

A note on this passage

A crucial piece of the plot surfaces inside his complaint: 'tua irmã pretende com instancia, que eu a liberte' — your sister keeps pressing me to free her. Malvina is keeping the oath she swore over the corpse in Chapter II; off-stage, steadily, she has been petitioning her husband for Isaura's freedom, 'allegando que essa era a vontade de minha defunta mãe', citing the old mistress's dying wish. So the deathbed intention that the delayed will never recorded lives on — carried now by Malvina's memory instead of by law. But that is exactly its weakness: a wish remembered is not a wish enforceable. Leôncio can dismiss with a shrug what a signed testament would have compelled. The whole tragic architecture of Chapter II pays off here: because the men ran out the clock on the will, Isaura's freedom now depends on a husband's goodwill — and we are watching him refuse it.
