He hints at a danger he will not fully name. 'Se me não engano, já lhe adivinhei os planos e as intenções' — if I'm not mistaken, I've already guessed his plans and intentions. The 'his' is Leôncio, and 'planos e intenções' hangs a threat in the air without spelling it: the reader, who has met Leôncio, can fill in what a master's designs on a beautiful slave are likely to be. Henrique casts himself as the one who sees the trap and can spring her from it, but he is fishing as much as warning — he wants her frightened enough of one man to accept another. The scene keeps circling the same grim fact, that whatever is decided, it is decided about her by the men around her.
