The detail 'aos pares', in pairs (the 1875 text prints 'paser'), gives the weeping a helpless rhythm — tear after tear, two at a time, faster than she can hide them. Guimarães lingers on Malvina's beauty even in grief ('formosos olhos'), the way he lingers on Isaura's: in this novel, women's suffering and their loveliness are always shown together, and the pairing is itself part of the ache.
