His chosen weapon is contempt — 'a maior indiferença e mesmo de desdem'. He will belittle their pain into 'arrufos', mere sulks, as if a wife's heartbreak were a passing tiff. To name Malvina's devastation a sulk is its own cruelty: he shrinks her suffering to keep the upper hand.
