Alone, without means and without protection, he found himself forced to live by the work of his own hands,
'Do trabalho de seos braços' — by the work of his arms. Guimarães dignifies manual labor pointedly in a slave economy: honest work with one's own hands is honorable, and the man who does it outranks the idle master who owns other people's.
