Leôncio's father, having had occasion to know him, and appreciating his merit,
Even the hard old master once saw Miguel's quality and valued it. The concession sharpens the later cruelty: the man who hired Miguel for his merit is the same man who will throw him out in disgrace when that merit becomes inconvenient.
