'Whoever it is, come in,' cried Leôncio, giving thanks to heaven,
He seizes the interruption like a lifeline — 'giving thanks to heaven' for any excuse to end the scene. The irony is thick: the very visitor he blesses as a rescue is the father of the woman at the heart of his ruin.
