'Holy God!... what are you saying there, my dear?...'
He falls back on the wounded-innocent act — 'Santo Deos! what are you saying, my dear?' — as if her accusation were a fever-dream. The 'estar a + infinitive' (estás a dizer) is the living Portuguese progressive: what are you in the act of saying.
