and would take her rather for a young lady who, for diversion, spun among the slave-women.
The image is almost a genre painting: a highborn girl trying her hand at the spinning-wheel to pass an idle hour. The bitter irony is that this is no game for Isaura — the wheel is her sentence — and 'por desenfado,' for amusement, is exactly what it is not. Guimarães lets the pretty picture stand so its falseness aches.
