The narrator steps forward and addresses the reader directly — 'o leitor' — a habit of the 1875 serial novel, where the storyteller is a companion at your elbow. He promises the explanation 'em duas palavras,' in two words, and then takes a whole sequence to give it: the intimacy is part of the pleasure.
