E’ assim, que o paciente se esquece do juiz, que lavrou a sentença
It is thus that the sufferer forgets the judge who drew up the sentence,
Guimarães gives the confusion its perfect figure. The 'paciente' — the one who suffers, the condemned — forgets the judge who wrote the sentence in his chamber and never appears again. 'Lavrou' is the exact legal verb for drawing up a judgment: the master's cruelty is cold, distant, done with a pen.
