A note on this passage

The mock-servant flourish. Rosa plays the attentive maid offering a 'caldinho,' a little broth, and a 'chocolate' — a rich lady's drink, unthinkable in the senzala — as if Isaura were still mistress of the house. The false solicitude is the cruelest register of all, courtesy weaponized.
