The setting

Isaura did not have much time to give full vent to her anguished reflections.

A note on this passage

The lament is cut short by the world. 'Dar larga expansão' — to give wide vent — is what grief needs and what she is never allowed; solitude for the enslaved is only ever a brief accident between demands. The sentence's very brevity enacts the interruption it describes.
