The contrast completes itself: from perfumed rooms to 'paredes enfumaçadas,' smoke-blackened walls. 'Mettida' — shut in, stuck — makes the senzala a kind of prison. André means the description as commiseration, but it doubles as an honest picture of the workroom, and Guimarães lets the real squalor of the place show through the flatterer's mouth.
