Rosa, who is also a pretty little lass, is wild about me;
He offers Rosa as proof of his desirability — 'bebe os ares por mim,' she drinks the air for me, the vivid Portuguese idiom for being head over heels. It is a careless cruelty: Rosa's real, wounded feeling reduced to a credential in André's sales pitch. The chapter's tangle of jealousies is laid bare — Rosa burns for André, André for Isaura, Isaura for none of them.
