Isaura, que um momento suspendera o seo trabalho, e com o rosto escondido entre as mãos se embevecia em amargas reflexões,
Isaura, who had for a moment paused her work, and with her face hidden in her hands was sunk in bitter reflections,
Her guard is down at the worst moment. Face buried in her hands, 'embevecia em amargas reflexões' — lost, absorbed, in bitter thought — she has retreated so far inward that the world has fallen away. The verb 'embevecer' usually means rapt delight; turned to grief, it makes her sorrow a kind of trance, and leaves her utterly unguarded before the one man she most needed to see coming.
