A place beside Rosa

Este mandou collocar a roda em um espaço desoccupado, que infelizmente para Isaura ficava ao pé de Rosa.
He had the wheel set in an empty space which, unluckily for Isaura, was right beside Rosa.
The narrator's 'unluckily' is a small thumb on the scale, and the placement is the plot in miniature: of all the wheels in the hall, Isaura's is set beside her one enemy. Chance, or the story's cruelty, seats the dove next to the woman who wishes her ruin — and the long afternoon of torment is arranged.
