Isaura went to sit down by the wheel, and set about readying it to begin the work.
She does not have to be told twice. The verbs are quiet and practical — sit, ready, begin — and they show a woman who meets humiliation by simply doing the task well. The spinning-wheel, an instrument of the senzala's endless labour, becomes in her hands just another thing to be handled with competence.
