The clause completes the correction: her grief is not vanity. She had spent her whole life 'junto de suas senhoras' — beside her mistresses, in the intimacy of the house — and losing that place would wound any heart; but Guimarães insists the wound she feels is larger than status. It is the fear of what captivity, now unmasked, intends to do to her.
