The narrator hazards a cause, gently — talvez, perhaps. Her dignity may come from simply knowing she is, in every way that is not legal, the superior of those around her. It is a delicate thing to say of a slave in 1875, and Guimarães softens it with a 'perhaps' while leaving it standing.
