Chapter VIII opens with the narrator's direct address, a hallmark of the serial novel: 'agora nos é indispensavel,' now we must, he says, breaking the scene at its most charged. He leaves Isaura suspended 'diante de seo dissoluto e barbaro senhor' — before her master, cornered as we last saw her — to double back and explain how the household came to this pass. The suspense of Cap. VII's cliff-hanger is held deliberately open.
