A note on this passage

The image is complete and damning: 'recostado ao alpendre, fumando indolentemente o seo charuto' — lounging against the veranda, lazily smoking. The planter's leisured ease becomes an act of contempt; while his wife's world collapses, he performs boredom. The cigar is the perfect prop of a man playing at not caring.
