The cruel irony completes itself: the maxim worked, and so Malvina 'não pôde descobrir' — could not discern — the truth beneath the mask. She leaves believing she wounds him with her going, never guessing it is his triumph. His performance robs her even of the knowledge that would harden her resolve; her ignorance is the measure of his success.
