or in the gloomiest corners of the bedchambers, spent hours and hours amid frights and anguish,
Even indoors there is no rest, only 'os mais sombrios recantos,' the darkest corners, where she waits out 'horas e horas entre sustos e angustias.' The repetition 'horas e horas' stretches the time on the page as it stretches for her. Fright ('susto,' the sudden start of alarm) and anguish (the long ache of dread) alternate without relief; her whole existence has narrowed to hiding and waiting.
