The first protector is disqualified by class. Miguel is an 'obscuro e pobre feitor' — an obscure, poor overseer — with no 'ingresso,' no right of entry, to the great house where his daughter is held. The physical fact of the closed door is also a social fact: a poor man cannot cross the threshold of the powerful, even to reach his own child.
