dirigindo a Isaura palavras enternecidas, começou a olhal-a com certa desconfiança e afastamento,
addressing tender words to Isaura, began to look upon her with a certain distrust and estrangement,
The 'palavras enternecidas' — tender words — were the ones Malvina caught her husband directing at Isaura; that is the scene she stumbled on. The wound of it turns her gaze: she 'começou a olhal-a com certa desconfiança e afastamento,' began to regard Isaura with distrust and a drawing-away. Jealousy misassigns the blame, punishing the victim of Leôncio's desire as if she were its author.
