The verb 'derreter,' to melt, gives Rosa's slander its sensual charge: she pictures Isaura going soft, swooning, 'diante de sinhô moço,' before the young master — 'sinhô moço' being the dialect address for the heir Leôncio. It inverts the reality the reader has watched for eight chapters: it is Leôncio who pursues, Isaura who resists to the point of martyrdom. Rosa turns the victim into the seductress.
