For all her coldness, Malvina's mere presence protected Isaura: 'uma salva-guarda, uma sombra protectora,' a safeguard, a protecting shadow. The shade image returns from Chapter V's 'boa sombra' — cover from the sun's cruelty. Even a mistress turned distrustful was, simply by being there, a wall between Isaura and the master. This is why her departure is catastrophe, not relief.
