The narrator concedes how little that shield weighed: 'por menor que fosse o respeito' — however small the respect Leôncio had for his wife. He honoured her scarcely at all. And yet even that scrap of regard, or of caution before her eyes, was enough to stay him. The measure of Isaura's peril is that her only defence rested on the faintest of restraints.
