Isaura weighed all this, and it is hard to conceive the state of terror and faintness into which that poor soul fell
Isaura 'ponderava isso tudo' — weighed it all, understood precisely how her protection had rested on Malvina and now was gone. The narrator confesses the horror strains description: 'é custoso fazer-se idéa,' it is hard to conceive, the 'terror e desfallecimento' — terror and swooning collapse — of that 'pobre alma.' By admitting words fall short, he makes the dread larger than any he could name.
