Let us spare the reader the narration of the shameful scene that took place there.
The narrator draws a veil, and the drawing of it is itself a statement. 'Poupemos ao leitor' — let us spare the reader — the 'scena vergonhosa,' the shameful scene. By refusing to narrate, he lets the reader's imagination supply what decency will not print, and marks the encounter as beneath depiction. The reticence is 1875 propriety, but it also spares Isaura the further indignity of being watched.
