Leoncio reconhecia tambem, e nem podia contestar, que sempre fôra voto de sua fallecida mãe deixar livre Isaura por sua morte.
Leôncio also acknowledged, and could not deny, that it had always been his late mother's wish to leave Isaura free at her death.
The second strand of the knot: his mother's dying wish. 'Voto' means both a wish and a vow — a sacred obligation. The dead mistress loved Isaura 'como a uma filha,' and meant to free her at her own death. Leôncio 'nem podia contestar,' could not even dispute it. Every legitimate claim points one way — toward Isaura's freedom — which is precisely why he must break them all.
