I must go to the Court to collect his papers and acquaint myself with the state of his affairs.
The stall extends into a journey. 'A côrte' — the Court — is Rio de Janeiro, seat of the Empire, a trip of days each way; going there to 'arrecadar os papeis' and learn the estate's condition buys him weeks. Each errand is real enough to be unanswerable and vague enough to stretch as long as he likes. The machinery of a landed estate becomes a machine for postponement.
