The narrator draws the grim balance. A death might have brought release; this one brings only continuation — 'não podia senão prolongar,' could do nothing but prolong the 'melindrosa e deploravel situação,' the delicate and deplorable state. For Isaura, the old commendador's death removes the one figure whose promise (to free her) might still have bound Leôncio; his passing leaves her more exposed, not less.
