The final impudence: Leôncio drapes his refusal in his dead mother's memory. She was 'tão sollicita pela sorte futura de Isaura' — so solicitous for Isaura's future — and so, he argues, freeing her hastily would betray that care. He borrows the very authority Malvina cited against him and turns it into a reason to keep the captive. The mother's love becomes the jailer's alibi.
