The excuse closes on the pretext of marriage: a 'bom marido' must be found, and such things take time — 'não se arranja assim de um dia para outro.' It is the perfect open-ended delay, a task with no deadline, that keeps Isaura in the house indefinitely. Under the language of prudent care lies a simple aim: never to let her go.
