He, as he had already coldly resolved, parried the bolts of feminine wrath on the shield of a cynical, jesting insolence,
The narrator arms the scene in the imagery of combat: Malvina's anger comes as 'raios,' lightning-bolts, and Leôncio 'aparou' them — parried, caught them — on a shield of 'imprudencia cynica e galhofeira,' cynical, jesting insolence. Crucially it was all 'friamente deliberado,' coldly premeditated: he had chosen mockery in advance as the surest way to madden her. Flippancy is his deliberate armour.
