No assomo do despeito não calculava se teria forças bastantes para levar a effeito aquelles freneticos juramentos,
In the surge of her spite she did not reckon whether she would have strength enough to carry out those frenzied oaths,
The narrator gently undercuts the vows even as they are sworn. 'No assomo do despeito' — in the surge, the sudden upwelling of spite — she 'não calculava,' did not stop to reckon, whether she could actually keep such 'freneticos juramentos.' Anger promises what the heart may not be able to pay; the seed of her eventual softening is planted in the very moment of her defiance.
