Chapter IX opens inside the fire. Leôncio's desire is drawn as physical combustion — 'o coração ardendo nas chammas de uma paixão febril e delirante,' his heart ablaze in the flames of a feverish, raving passion. 'Febril' and 'delirante' cast it as sickness and madness, not love: a man past reason. The failed seduction of Chapter VIII has not cooled him but stoked the blaze.
