offereceria ao artista inspirado o mais bello e sublime modelo para a effigie da Mãe Dolorosa, a quem nesse momento dirigia suas ardentes supplicas.
she would offer the inspired artist the most beautiful and sublime model for the effigy of the Mother of Sorrows, to whom at that moment she addressed her ardent supplications.
The tableau names itself: Isaura is the living 'modelo' for the 'Mãe Dolorosa', the Mater Dolorosa, the Virgin who watched her son tortured. The identification is the chapter's boldest stroke. Isaura prays to the Mother of Sorrows and, in the same instant, becomes her image — the innocent handed to cruelty, the pure body threatened with the whip. Guimarães fuses supplicant and saint: the enslaved woman kneeling on a workroom floor is offered as the truest face of Christian suffering, worthier of an altar than any painted queen. For a Catholic readership that still countenanced slavery, the equation was pointed to the edge of scandal — that the Church's holiest image of grief was, at that moment, sitting in chains-to-be on a Brazilian plantation.
